OBJECTIVE
This procedure is used to successfully replace a failed FSP in an IBM Power system
Important note!!!!
Important note!!! Be sure that the customer has backed up the partition data to the HMC prior
to beginning the work on the FSPs!!!!!
If replacing both FSPs at the same time, to circumvent code mismatch issues, you will need to
initialize all partition data on the managed server after the FSPs are talking to the HMC. This will
allow for recovery of partition data from the HMC to the managed server.
PURPOSE
Prepare the spare FSP for replacement
Perform the FSP replacement
CONSIDERATIONS
Access to the customer’s HMC (Hardware Management Console) with hscroot credentials
Ability for possible downtime or at minimum a loss of availability to a CEC
Basic hand tools are needed
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) prevention with static straps and mats

PERFORM THE FSP REPLACEMENT
Log in to the customer’s HMC
Launch the exchange FRU procedure from either the serviceable events or the exchange
FRU menu options
NOTE: Based on the version of HMC software the locations of the serviceable events and exchange
FRU will vary
Once in the exchange FRU procedure, add the correct FSP to the procedure and launch
the replacement
Follow the on screen prompting and instructions
NOTE: When removing the FSP be careful not to damage the flex cable connectors
During the replacement, firmware may have to be synced between the primary FSP and
new replacement FSP
NOTE: Firmware syncing can take over an hour to complete
After the replacement FSP is installed it will join the network, obtain an IP address, and
update users and passwords
Once the new FSP has updated, the CEC it is installed into will power on and post
After the power on is completed, and the firmware has synced, the procedure will
complete
Activate any partitions that were shutdown prior to the start of the repair
