OBJECTIVE

Acquire the necessary details of the 9 Words to assist in problem determination on an IBM AS400 system.

PURPOSE

Field Engineer will be able to work with the IBM AS400 manuals to interpret system reference codes and problem isolation procedures for the purpose of problem resolution.

PROCEDURES

Collect the Data - Use the following methods to gather the 9 Words. These will be used along with System Reference Code listings and Problem Isolation Procedures (PIP’s) for problem determination.
a. From the Control Panel > Go to Function 11, 12, and 13. Record the top 16 and the bottom 16 characters of each, as shown, from the display, Figure 1.
b. Service Action Log > Navigate to Service Action Log > Start a Service Tool, Hardware Service Manager, Work with Service Action Log, Enter dates, Put the Cursor on the desired SRC line, Display Failing Item Information, Display details, 9 Words should be displayed if not use the Control Panel instructions.
c. Product Activity Log > Navigate to Product Activity Log > Start a Service Tool, Product Activity Log, Analyze Log, All Logs, Enter dates, Display Analysis, Put cursor on the desired SRC line, Select Display Report, Select Additional Information, 9 Words should be displayed if not use the Control Panel instructions
d. Hardware Management Console > Use the HMC to Navigate to Manage Serviceable Events > Select the correct Server, Select Serviceability, Select Manage Serviceable Events, Make all selections ALL, Select box next to the desired SRC Code line, click on Selected, click on View Details, the 9 Words (also called Extensions) are displayed – you may need to scroll to see all of them.

Each function may have from 8 to 32 total characters displayed. Words are normally eight characters long. Word 1 can also have an Extended Word that can make it extend out to 32 characters long.
Function 11 is Word 1. Read left to right. The SRC is the first 8 characters beginning on the left side of the top 16 characters. Any other characters displayed in Function 11 are considered the Extended Word 1. As shown in Figure 2.

The first four characters 1 through 4 starting from the left side of Word 1 are the SRC type. This describes where the problem originated, such as an I/O card, power supply, tape unit, Licensed Internal Code (LIC) etc. The second set of four characters 4 through 8 immediately following the first four are the Unit Reference Code (URC). This refers to the action that should be taken or to a sub part of an SRC type. An example of a sub part could be a Memory DIMM on a CPU/Memory Board, as shown

Functions 12 are Words 2, 3, 4, and 5. There are no Extended Words for these. Word 2 is the first 8 characters beginning on the left side of the top 16 characters of Function 12, shown in Figure 4.

Word 3 is the 8 rightmost characters of the top 16 characters of Function 12 read left to right, shown in Figure 5.

Word 4 is the first 8 characters beginning on the left side of the bottom 16 characters of Function 12, shown in Figure 6.

Word 5 is the 8 rightmost characters of the bottom 16 characters of Function 12 read left to right, shown in Figure 7.

Function 13 is Words 6, 7, 8, and 9. There are no Extended Words for these. Word 6 is the first 8 characters beginning on the left side of the top 16 characters of Function 13, shown in Figure 8.
