Replace BBU X1

OBJECTIVE

Replace XIO BBU Battery Pack & Reset Expiration Date

PURPOSE

A known issue exists in which EMC XIO BBU’s are manufactured & pre-configured to fail on the same date, thereby failing within hours of one another and creating a ‘down-system’ scenario. This Job Aid is also applicable to any BBU that is set to expire and warnings are being generated by the array.

CONSIDERATIONS

In a proactive situation, the system will not experience any downtime.
No special tools or files are needed
Work on only one BBU at time in any cluster, regardless of the number of Bricks and BBUs in the cluster.

PROCEDURES

BBU Replacement

  1. Log into the XMSCLI with ‘tech’ credentials.
  2. Identify which BBU needs to be serviced

  1. Move the power cords coming out of the BBU to rack power one lead at a time.

    This ensures the components in the array are fully powered and minimizes any risk of outage.

  2. Disconnect serial cable from BBU that goes to the associated SC.

    May not be applicable in multi-brick configurations.

  3. Hold down the power button on the BBU until it shuts off.
  4. Disconnect Power going to BBU
  5. Open front panel of BBU and disconnect the battery lead connector (Red and Black cables)
  6. Press power button to discharge capacitors.
  7. Replace cells at this time if needed but DO NOT connect them to the BBU. (leave Red and Black connector unplugged)
  8. Wait 5 full minutes.
  9. Connect Battery leads.
  10. Connect main power input.
  11. Press power button on BBU for 3 seconds.

    If you have done this correctly, then the front panel should ask for system language to be chosen.

  12. Select desired language and then reconnect all cables to BBU from cluster.

    The date flag has been reset on the BBU at this time.

Verify successful replacement of the BBU

  1. Login to the XMSCLI with ‘tech’ credentials.
  2. Verify status of the system
show-bbus

The battery must be charged to at least 80% before the array will mark it as healthy and connected. If your output still shows as failed, you will need to wait until the battery is charged to this point and re-run the ‘show-bbus’ command.
